UPR G 1  UPR F 4

09/09/07 Away

UPR Falcons started their season with the toughest game possible, away to friends and rivals the Griffins.

The Griffins started strongly and with the Falcon’s defence backing away, Ellis hit a strong shot from the edge of the box just beating Sebbie’s dive. 1-0 down.

Slowly, the Falcons started getting their game together. Nick and Tom were solid at full back and Luke was winning almost every ball, breaking up the Griffins’ attacks.

Jacob and Harsh had solid games in midfield and Jamie looked sharp and dangerous.

After 15 minutes, Jamie fed Charlie on the left wing who outstripped the Griffins’ defence before cutting inside and slotting the ball in the far corner. 1-1.

It was an exciting game with both teams looking sharp, Danny broke through for the Griffins and looked sure to score until Sebbie dived bravely at his feet with Tom completing the clearance to keep it level at half time.

In the second half, the Falcons stepped up a gear. Jamie crashed a shot against the bar but the Griffins cleared. Then Tom sent Charlie through on goal, Kieran made a great save but Jamie followed up and slotted it home. 2-1 to the Falcons.

Five minutes later, Nick won a tackle and fed Luke who put Charlie through on goal, again Kieran saved but Charlie followed up to finish. 3-1.

The Griffins never gave up and still looked dangerous on the attack but the Falcons pulled together with Jacob and Harsh making good tackles with Nick and Tom winning challenge after challenge and Luke mopping up everything. In the dying minutes, Luke broke up another attack and surged forward, he cracked a fierce shot which beat the keeper but came back off the post. Goal hungry Charlie followed up to celebrate the first hat-trick of the season. 4-1. Moments later referee Steve blew for full time.

Luke won man of the match trophy for his all-action display.

Thanks to our mystery reporter for the week and also the very prompt work. My brief views on the performances are all very positive and are ;.

Sebastien - made himself big and was brave on a number of occasions made good saves and blocks to foil the Griffins attacks. Particularly from Danny and Callum. We need to try to get a little more distance on kicks but all in all a very good first game which gave the defence and midfield a good sense of security.

Thomas - stayed calm and collected throughout playing numerous good balls down the line. Didn’t stray out of position at all and allowed midfield to push up, particularly in the second half.

Nick - similar to Thomas had a good strong game and won a lot of loose balls at the back. Some no nonsense clearing and cleaning up.

Jacob - stuck to his task (and his man) throughout the game and made it hard for the Griffins to break through the centre. Strong and focussed.

Harsh - played in a similar role to Jacob and also did very well winning tackles and helping to break up Griffins attacks. Must stay focussed throughout but did well.

Jamie - played some lovely balls though to Charlie and Luke and also pushed up well. Took his goal calmly and accurately and also hit the bar.

Luke - Strong, quick and was constantly throughout the game winning tackles and driving forward. Nearly scored and was a worthy motm (although the whole team were contenders).

Charlie - A hat trick and on top of that pressed the Griffins high up the pitch causing lots of problems. Used his power and pace well throughout and the hat trick was well deserved. Hopefully more to come..

UPR F 2 BOCA 3

16/09/07 Home

UPR Falcon's second game of the season saw them facing Boca at home this morning. Moral was high following last weeks impressive defeat of the Griffins but the pressure was on as Boca took control of the game in the opening minutes.

A forward broke through the Falcons defence in the very first minute only to stumble at Seb’s feet before taking his shot. This was followed shortly by another attempt on goal hitting the post. The 1st goal of the match came in the 5th minute with Boca taking full advantage of a corner and earning a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons responded well, fighting hard to take control in midfield. Luke wearing the captain’s armband put on an impressive display clearing ball after ball with no nonsense headers.

The Falcons pushed forward taking the game into Boca’s half. Jamie’s corner was knocked away only as far as Nick whose volley forced the keeper to make a hasty save as Charlie closed in.

18 minutes into the game Charlie made a surge down the wing crossing the ball into Luke whose shot was knocked away by the keeper, Jamie came in for the rebound forcing the keeper to make yet another clearance but goal hungry Charlie who started the attack was there to hammer the ball into the back of the net and give the Falcons their equalizer.

As the half time whistle blew the score was 1-1 and the Falcons were very much back in the game.

Boca came out strongly at the start of the second half catching the Falcons off guard and unsettling the defence. Scoring within the 1st minute they took control of the game and continued to put Seb under fire forcing him to make several brave saves but by the 5th minute the Falcons had conceded another taking the score to 3-1.

Next followed a spell of frustration for the Falcons as they fought hard but each opportunity failed to materialise in a goal. Charlie made a break down the wing taking the ball out wide and knocking it into the area only to watch it pass straight across an empty goal mouth. Tom’s midfield clearance was on target and for a moment looked like the bounce had foiled the keeper only to skim over the bar. And an attack by Jamie, Luke and Charlie saw Luke’s shot go just wide of the post.

In the 19th minute the Falcons determination paid off and the captain and man of the match Luke fought through the defence to take his shot and gain a well earned goal.

A point now within their reach the Falcons battled frantically. A corner in the dying seconds of the game saw every man push up the field in hope of a last minute equalizer but as the ball was cleared away down the pitch the refs whistle blew. The final score, 3-2 to Boca.

My brief views on the performances are as follows;

Sebastien - A second sound display and the reason that that Falcons were able to come back into the game and make a fight of it. Sebastien made a string of good saves and remained alert and focussed throughout. The additional distance on the goal kicks also assisted in pushing up the pitch.

Thomas - Again another consistent game, with Thomas keeping his position and making important tackles. The left side of defence is Thomas's best position and he assisted well when we were on the attack.

Nick - Did not win enough balls and was too concerned with other players game and not his own. Played better in the last 15 minutes but needs to be alert from the start and keep his attitude channelled correctly..

Harsh - Tried hard and has the right attitude but his focus was not there and lost his man too often. Must track back with players, concentrate and do the basics.

Jamie - Another good performance and kept on trying, Jamie put through some nice passes and kept the ball flowing. Must try to tackle a little harder and get in the box when we are attacking the flanks.

Luke - Strong, quick and was constantly throughout the game winning tackles and driving forward and won a lot of important headers to break up play. Worthy motm for the second game in a row.

Charlie - Again strong and quick and provided a great outlet, never giving up on any chase. Got one goal and caused the defence issues.

Zak - Energetic and fast, came on when BOCA were clearly on top already which didn’t help him settle into the game. Zak tried hard but must track runners when playing in defence and stay focussed.

UPR F 2 Lakeview B 2

30/09/07 Home

From the start Lakeview pressed the Falcons, within minutes a quick goal secured a 1-0 advantage to Lakeview. From the restart the Falcons regrouped and took control of the midfield, with Luke using his head to good effect sending back the opposing goal keepers, kicks. The defence Jamie, Tom and Nick, stood strong and cleared any attempts at attack from Lakeview, Falcons continued to press and after a period of sustained pressure the ball was dug out of a tackle by Zak on the edge of the Lakeview box, some strong interconnecting play saw a great pass to Charlie who rifled home a right foot shoot into the bottom right hand corner, 1-1 first half.

2nd half the Falcons continued to press, Charlie running on from some great passes from Luke, however they continued to be thwarted by the Lakeview goal keeper. Another Falcons attack resulted in a corner which was whipped in and fell to Nick who thumped in a tremendous shot to the top left hand corner, 2-1 to the Falcons.

The second phase of the final half saw Lakeview come back strong the big no 10 always a threat, Harsh continued to save shot after shot, even using his head to clear the ball, finally the ball broke free and a 2nd goal for Lakeview was knocked home.  With 5 minutes to go the Falcons looked up for it and found a second wind, camping in the Lakeview box, however time was against them and the final whistle blew on another Falcons attack.

A great effort by the boys with a load of possession, narrowly missing out on a win. - Man of the match Charlie who ran his socks off for the team and was always a threat to the Lakeview defence.

My brief views on the performances are as follows;

Harsh - Did well in an unfamiliar role and had little chance with either goal. Remained alert and had a sound game.

Thomas - I believe that this is Thomas's best position and he is 'owning it' for the Falcons, as last man he maintained positive and calm throughout and was rarely caught out of position. Will be captain next week and I hope to see him using his awareness to ensure the defence works as a unit. Another solid display.

Nick - Was committed and won nearly every 50-50 ball. Kept his position and channelled his aggression well pushing the team on and hit a good goal to cap a very good display.

Jamie - Did really well in the right defensive position and played the ball accurately down the line to start attacks going. Is becoming more assured in his own ability and confidence meaning he is beginning to win some important tackles. Jamie's best game so far.

Luke - Another good performance in the middle, winning strong tackles and then driving forward. Links defence with attack and his pace see's him at both ends of the pitch. I would like to see him have shoot from around the edge of the box a little more.

Charlie - Ran the channels and led the attack tirelessly again throughout. Again got one goal and caused the defence constant problems and but for good handling by the Lakeview keeper would of had more goals, but did sometimes miss a chance to play the pass, go and and receive a return. A worthy motm and after a third very good display in a row.

Zak - Had a good game, was much more involved and played a big part in the first goal playing a nice pass into the box. Has lots of speed and we need to work on getting Zak into the right areas when the Falcons attack to use his speed.

Jacob - Played in a 3 positions (my fault) which didn't help him. But once out on the right looked better and tracked their attack well. Jacob may well be best suited to a role in the right of midfield which we will try in the next match.

This was a game that after a slow starting few minutes I think that the Falcons held a grip on and could certainly of won but for a little more luck, a very good display by the Lakeview keeper and a slightly better final ball by ourselves. I think we are now beginning to play some good football in patches and was really impressed with the spine of our team yesterday and the effort and commitment of every play could not be faulted.

Heath Park B 1 UPR F 2

07/10/07 Away

A close fought game saw Heath Park start quicker than the Falcons in the first few minutes and put pressure on the midfield and defence, Sebastien had to be alert in goal to gather some dangerous loose balls. However as the game progressed, in midfield Luke began to win more tackles and ease the pressure taking the game forward and pushing the Falcons more and more into the oppositions half. By midway through the first half the Falcons were on top with the defence much firmer and Tom, Jacob and Nick held solid against some direct route football from Heath Park.

Falcons were creating chances and only some excellent goalkeeping saw the game remain level as Charlie, Jamie and Luke all had good opportunities to score. A one two between Charlie and Jamie saw Charlie close in on goal but the keeper stood strong again. However the Falcons were continually pressing and a lovely move saw Charlie deservedly putting the Falcons into the lead before half time. The Falcons continued to press and in the second half extended their lead when a cross saw the keeper spill the ball after a challenge from Charlie and Luke forced the ball across the line. The Falcons continued to push for a third but a quick interchange of play saw Heath Park pull one back.

At the final whistle every player had fully played their part and Harsh did very well when he came in sliding in and winning some important tackles. A very hard decision again to pick the man of the match with all players in contention but Sebastien was a worthy winner.

My brief views on the performances are as follows; A

Sebastien -  Looking stronger and more positive with every game. A very solid display commanding his area. Sebastien kicking is also gaining more distance which immediately assists in putting the opposition on the back foot.

Thomas - Has been reliable all season and never mis-timed a tackle. Kept his head on a number of occasions as last man defender and was very solid playing the simple ball at the right time.

Nick - Had a strong game and although lacking pace made up for it in strength and the desire to win the ball. Rarely let a man past him and never shirked a challenge.  Had a penalty well saved and was a strong contender for MOTM.

Harsh - Came on in the second half and played well as right back. Still drifted a little but getting better, Harsh is not afraid to tackle and has a strong clearance.

Jamie - Again some nice balls to set up opportunities and got himself into the box much more consistently to add some scoring potential. Nearly capped his display with a goal.

Luke - A midfield powerhouse. Again took the reins of the game and pushed the Falcons forward consistently. Never lost a tackle and was all over the pitch. Must not be afraid to shoot but good a well deserved goal.

Charlie - Another massive performance with constant runs and has formed good playing relationship with Luke and Jamie. Keeps on fighting and causing opposition problems. On another day may have had a hat trick but some good goalkeeping.

Jacob - Had a quiet game but stayed in position and made some good interventions. Just needs to be a little more assertive and impose himself on the game.

UPR F 4    Senrab C6

04/11/07 Away

No mystery match report this week I am afraid so here are my views ;

Nick - Started in central defence but his injury was obviously restricting his movement. Helped out second half by going in goal and releasing Kunal into defence could do very little with Senrab’s goals. Kept his head up and kept trying.

Thomas – A good display especially in the last 10-15 minutes when we pushed forward. Got caught out early on in second half but generally had another consistent game, keeping his position and making important tackles.

Kunal – Had a great game and pushed the match to BOCA in the second half, kept his head up well. Again was caught out early in the second half but then won a lot of tackles and was solid in defence for final 15 minutes. MOTM

Jamie - Another good performance and kept on trying, Jamie put through some nice passes and kept the ball flowing. Must still try to tackle a little harder and get in the box when we are attacking.

Luke – As usual stayed strong, quick and pulled himself and the team together when 5-1 down. Did not give up and drove the team forward with great determination. Score two goals and set up a lot of opportunities, a very good game.  Also took his penalty well.

Charlie - Again strong and quick and provided a great outlet throughout the game, never giving up on any chase. Gave us the lead from a solo run and scared the defenders throughout. Got two goals and caused the defence constant issues.

Zak – Never stopped trying and used his engine to run constantly. Came off for the last few minutes as he looked exhausted. Best game so far.  Zak needs to develop his sense of timing a little more and not be scared to tackle.

Harsh – Got stuck in and stayed focussed throughout. Another player who is definitely developing and growing his awareness. Made some very good tackles and played the ball quickly and safely.

UPR F 0 Senrab  D1

11/11/07 Away

No mystery match report again this week so here are my views ;

It was actually our worst performance of the season by some distance  with very little cohesion, shape or football generally played by the Falcons. We looked lethargic and not up for the battle which could of seen us move back to second in the table. As a team we need to fight harder and work more as a unit, with Charlie often a lone figure up front with very little support.  As individual players there were acceptable performances and it was not through lack of players effort but as a unit we just looked too much kick and run and not enough control or guise.

Sebastien - Did well with some good handling and decisive actions. Could not be faulted throughout and looked solid, just needs a little more distance still with kicks if possible.

Thomas – Played well as left sided defender, struggled a little with the concept of pushing up and assisting defence when pushed into midfield role. However, was rarely caught out of position and was MOTM.

Kunal – Was rarely troubled by the Senrab team and used his strength on a number of occasions to make telling tackles. Distribution was off in this game.

Nick – Had a mixed game, starting in midfield but couldn’t get forward enough and cause Senrab problems, moved into defensive role winning lots of tackles and all over the defence. Needed to stay in position a little more.

Jamie – Had a quieter game than usual and although constantly trying never really imposed himself into this match. Had a penalty saved.

Luke – Started on the line and came in the 1st half, it didn’t work. Luke struggled to get into his usual stride and was too often pushed deep. He did drive the game in the last 10 minutes as Falcons pushed for the equalizer but not his usual high standard throughout.

Charlie – never stopped trying but was too often on his own and a well marshalled Senrab defence were mainly in control.

Zak – Stayed in position well and tried hard but was sometimes caught watching the ball and letting the attacker drift behind him. Zak is beginning to get more involved now but still needs to be a bit more positive in tackling when in defence.

The result was a fair one and I am genuinely happy for all the UPR boys as a whole that it ended in a draw although the way it went with us being in front at half time and some of the decisions awarded it meant it was obviously a little deflating for the Falcons team. The game was always going to be very competitive with the Griffins on a roll and the Falcons trying to stop a run coming off three consecutive defeats, there were some strong tackles and commitment was very high throughout the game.

The Griffins started the game the quicker and Callum and Charles made a couple of good forays into the Falcons last third but Kunal and Jamie stood firm in defence.  The game was predominantly being played in the midfield section of the pitch and gradually the Falcons began to take an upper hand in midfield and Luke and Nick pushed the game towards the Griffins and a quick release midway through the first half saw Charlie outpace the defence and slot home coolly to give the Falcons the lead. For the next 5 minutes the Falcons pushed on and they had a series of corners which the Griffins defended well. Then again a quick through ball from Kunal and this time Luke ran on to finish well and make it 2-0. The Falcons then created a couple more half chances before half time most noticeably Ciaran gathering a shot from Charlie well.

In the second half it was a very different game and the Griffins exerted pressure right from the start and the Falcons found it hard to get the ball out of their own half. Jacob, Thomas (who came on for Jamie) and Kunal were continually called into action to stop the Griffins with Sam, Charles and Danny pushing forward and looking dangerous continually. In goal Harsh had to be alert and was forced to gather the ball on several occasions, with the Falcons scrambling the ball away with their backs to the wall. In attack Charlie was forced to drop back and assist in midfield due to our not being able to give him any service up front and Nick and Luke were forced deep into our half to help.

Finally after about 10 minutes the Griffins pulled one back through a strong move and Sam forced one over the line. With their tails up the Griffins continued to dominate the second half and what was a rare attack by the Falcons in the second half led to quick break by the Griffins and Danny finished well to equalise. There was undoubtedly a fail at the start of the move when Nick was taken down late but it is one of those decisions that sometimes you get and sometimes you don’t, this time we didn't. We brought Jacob off and Jamie back on in an attempt to curb some of the play coming from the Griffins right side and with only minutes remaining the Falcons seemed to take stock and rallied a little pushing more of the game up the field, but the Griffins continued to have the upper hand and looked the more threatening. Again they pushed the ball into the box and a very clumsy tackle on Nick saw him retaliate and the Griffins were awarded a penalty. Nick was pulled off immediately and replaced by Jacob as retaliation is not acceptable in any guise regardless of the original offence. Callum took the penalty but put it wide which was the last real chance of the game.

So in the end 2-2 was a fair result and a point apiece was a reflection of two very different halves. After the game whilst I took the goals down I was a bit disappointed to hear some of the comments that the boys made about the game and the decisions in it and I will be taking some time aside Saturday during our breakout in training to emphasise to the Falcons the general sportsmanship we expect from them and that we as a team need to display.

Harsh - Did well again in goal and had little chance with either goal. Remained alert and had a sound game. Is not a goalkeeper but has helped out a couple of times now and is beginning to look a lot more at ease.

Thomas - Came on at a difficult time at the start of the second half. Didn't panic and remained calm and positive throughout. Another sound and balanced performance.

Jamie - Played well in an unfamiliar role as left back in the first half. Played some nice passes and kept his position well.

Jacob - I started Jacob as a man marker but soon into the game moved him into a right defensive position. Stayed in position and kept calm, Jacob just needs to add a little assertiveness to his game now.

Nick - Played well in the first half pushing up. Had to defend during the second half and was amongst the thick of it until he spoilt his display with a retaliatory swipe that warranted a card, regardless of the original tackle.

Luke - Another strong performance in the middle, winning strong tackles and then driving forward. Used his pace well and slotted home well for the second goal.

Charlie - Ran the channels and led the attack tirelessly again throughout. Took his goal well and caused the defence constant problems. In the second half dropped deeper and helped foil the Griffins attacks.

Kunal - Was the Falcons motm. Kunal had a strong game throughout both halves and used his own strength and the desire to win the ball to block a lot of attacks. Rarely let a man past him is a very powerful last man.

Lakeview 0 UPR F 1

06/01/008 Away

This was a game where we never really played any controlled football and we can play a lot better than this. There was a general lack of shape and cohesion, we didn’t attack the ball enough or look to keep possession but that said effort and resolve could not be faulted across all nine players

A close fought game saw both teams creating openings and both Goalkeepers brought straight into the action with Sebastien again showing some very good handling and alertness to thwart Lakeview.

This game was won through effort and desire from the whole team rather than technique as we struggled to keep shape, the Christmas layoff was showing in our positional play and passing. After some good pressure on the ball from Jamie, Luke and Charlie then combined well and Luke hit the base of the post with a well struck shot. Shortly after Charlie beat two defenders only for the keeper again to make a good last ditch save. At the other end Thomas was having a very controlled game covering well as our last man defender. Nick and Luke were winning lots of balls but distribution was poor and we did not pass and move well. The effort never stopped however and finally we got the break.

Charlie collected the ball, ghosted into the box and neatly tucked the ball into the corner. For a brief second it looked like the ref had blown for a foul but the goal stood and shortly after the whistle blew for half time.

Both teams continued to create chances and Charlie and Luke began to push deeper and deeper into Lakeview’s territory with Kunal beginning to impose himself more after a very lethargic start to the game. A good tackle from Zak saw him push the ball to Nick, who pushed it to Luke and then on to Charlie for a blistering run but again the keeper stopped the Falcons. Harsh who had come on as a defender was taken off again as he seemed to be having difficulties slipping a bit with his trainers on but still played well.

This was a team performance as said before, we got all three points but it is one we can certainly improve upon.

My brief views on the performances are as follows; A

Sebastien -  A very solid display commanding his area and never spilt a ball. Adds confidence to the defence.

Thomas – A very accomplished game and full of running, neat and controlled and kept good position.

Kunal – Not his best game at the start but come on again in the second half and looked a little sharper. Some important clearances at the end.

Nick – Got stuck in, played better in the second half and towards the end some no nonsense clearing of the ball and tackling.

Harsh - Came on in the first half and played well. Looked a little unsteady due to footwear. Did well given this though in getting stuck in.

Jamie – tackling is getting better all the time and his striking of the ball was clean and crisp. Just a little more assertion needed but a good display.

Luke - A motm display. He won the ball consistently and got up and back.

Charlie – Another match winning goal and excellent performance. Led the line, often solo, and although constantly jostled kept causing the defence problems. Took his goal well and gives the whole team confidence.
